The Texas Tone® Amplifiers
Built By Hand in Austin, Texas
All Texas Tone amplifiers are build by hand in Austin, Texas, fabricated and/or assembled in our own workshop.
The following practices are performed by hand in our workshop:
- All schematic diagrams and 1:1 scale layout documents.
- Production and/or modification of turret, tag, or eyelet boards.
- Chassis preparation and/or modification.
- All component layout, connecting, and soldering.
- All wire and cable preparation and routing.
- All assembly and testing of finished products.
Texas Tone Amps uses many Commercial Off-the-Shelf components (COTS). The below listed components are procured from carefully selected vendors:
- Amplifier and speaker cabinets - Made in USA to Texas Tone Amp specifications.
- Amplifier chassis. Standard model chassis, Made in USA and modified by Texas Tone Amps.
- Tansformers. See below
- Speakers. See below.
- Vacuum tubes - made in the Slovak Republic or St. Petersburg, Russia. All tubes are tested for low noise and low microphonics, and all power tube in push-pull class AB amps are matched pairs or quartets. We do not use Chinese-made tubes.
All parts used on Texas Tone Amps are sourced for high quality, availabilty, and value. We strive to use USA made products whenever possible, and seriously avoid low-quality components. The below listed items are validated to be USA made:
- Cabinets for combo amps, amp heads, and speaker cabs.
- ToneSpeak™ speakers marked "Assembled in USA" - EIA code 114
- Heyboer transformers - EIA code 996.
- Magnetic Component transformers - EIA code 166.
- Eminence speakers marked "Assembled in the U.S.A." - EIA code 67.
- SoZo capacitors.
Many parts are globally made. In these cases we use components from firms well-known for qualtiy:
- Jensen Speakers - Made in Italy
- Celestion speakers - made globally
- Hammond transformers - Made in Canada
- Switchcraft (USA) and Cliff (UK) connecting devices.
- CTS potentiometers
- CDE Cornell Dubilier
- Mallory 150 Series capacitors - 125° C
- Orange Drop 715P & 716P
- Silver Mica
- Vishay
- Sprague capacitors
- Film capacitors
- Metal film (low noise) resistors
We prefer MIL-Spec parts due to their stringent quality requirements, consistency, and high temperature and high vibration performace. Most wire, cable, and resistors used in Texas Tone amps are MIL-Spec. After spending years in the electronic parts distribution business, leading the effort to obtain ISO 9001 certification and AS 9000 complieance, and garnering high scores from major aerospace and defense contractors for inteconnect devices, the valus is apparent.:
- MIL-W-22759/16 - ETFE insulated wire - 600V 150° C rating
- MIL-R-10509F - Metal Film Resistors: High precision, low noise, high temerature (155° C).
- NASA-STD-8739.3 for turret boards subjected to vibration and high temperature
